Understanding Vitamin A

Vitamin A is not one ingredient. It is a family of related molecules, and only one of them — retinoic acid — is the form your skin can use directly. Everything else is either a precursor your skin must convert, or is not vitamin A at all, despite what the label suggests.

How Vitamin A Works

Vitamin A works at the base of the epidermis, on the stem cells that produce every new layer of skin. It repairs genetic damage within those cells and regulates how they function, so they produce healthier cells at the right rate. Faster turnover follows from that repair. The point is not speed alone, but the quality of what reaches the surface.

Repaired cells behave differently, and that single mechanism is why one ingredient addresses concerns that look unrelated to one another:

Pigment production regulates, so tone evens. Vitamin A corrects how the pigment-producing cells behave, which affects sun spots, dark spots, melasma, the marks left after breakouts, and general unevenness.

Dead cells shed on schedule, so texture refines and skin catches the light. Dullness is often nothing more than cells sitting on the surface longer than they should.

Follicles clear, so congestion settles. Blackheads, congestion and the bumpy texture across the forehead and chin all improve. Pores do not shrink, but they look smaller once they are not packed.

Collagen production lifts, so lines soften and firmness returns. Vitamin A acts on the cells that produce collagen, which is why it works on fine lines, loss of density, and indented acne scarring — a collagen shortfall rather than a pigment one.

Skin thickens over time, so skin that is thin and reactive becomes more resilient and better able to hold hydration.

THE TYPES AND STRENGTHS

The Conversion Chain

The retinoids all sit on one chain. Each step is a conversion your skin performs, moving closer to the active form:

Retinyl esters → retinol → retinaldehyde (retinal) → retinoic acid

Only the last one is active. Every form to its left has to be converted first, and some potency is lost at each step. This is the logic behind every vitamin A product: each form is described by how close it sits to retinoic acid, and how many conversions your skin still has to perform.

Where a form sits on the chain sets its potency. How it is formulated and delivered sets how it feels. The two are not the same, which is why a well-delivered retinal can suit skin that a retinol does not.

Retinoic acid

The form skin uses directly. Because it needs no conversion, it is the most potent and the most likely to cause irritation. In Australia it is a scheduled substance, available on prescription only, and cannot be sold in cosmetic products. It is the reference point for everything below it.

Retinal (retinaldehyde)

One conversion step from active. That proximity is what allows retinal to work efficiently at low concentrations. Retinal is unstable in light and air, which is why formulation and delivery matter more here than anywhere else on the chain.

Retinol

The most familiar name in the family, and the established standard in cosmetic skincare. Two conversions from active, which means it works more gradually. That measured pace is what makes it both effective and sustainable in regular use.

Retinyl esters

Retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate sit at the far end of the chain — three conversions from active, and correspondingly the least potent. They have a supportive role in a formula. They are also worth recognising on an ingredient list: a product carrying retinyl palmitate alone can describe itself as containing vitamin A while delivering little of it to the skin.

What is the difference between retinal and retinol?

Is bakuchiol the same as retinol?

Bakuchiol is not a retinoid and contains no vitamin A. It is a plant active from babchi seed that mimics the effects of retinol. Rather than converting into retinoic acid, bakuchiol acts on many of the same genes directly — including those that govern collagen production — which is why studies find comparable results for firmness, tone and fine lines.

Sitting outside the vitamin A family gives it two strengths of its own. It is photostable, so it does not degrade in light and can be worn at any hour. And it is comfortable on reactive or vulnerable skin, which makes it a good place to begin and a good companion to keep.

Can I use vitamin A if my skin is reactive?
